The Declutter Darlings guide to organising on a budget

Organising your home

Organising your home is such a great way to minimise your stress levels and can also help you save money.

You will know where your belongings are and it will (hopefully!) stop you from purchasing more than one of something because you simply can’t find what you are looking for.

Remember decluttering costs nothing, just your time!

Set up a decluttering schedule/calendar with end goals for each area.

Look at tackling a category over a weekend, or 2 day period, whatever fits in best with your schedule.

Write these sessions into your calendar or diary and STICK TO THE DATES!

Have this schedule visible to you and as you work through and complete each category - cross it off or tick it off. Use a big red pen, or something visible to show you what you have achieved.

Motivation is the key for getting your home decluttered!

Once you’ve decluttered an area, organising the clear area will be your mission!

So many of us think that organising your home means spending a lot of money on storage solutions to make it perfect.

I am here to let you know that this is simply not true!

As long as you have a simple system in place, your home can become an organised haven for you.

Having imagination when it comes to utilising certain storage can truly help you live a more clutter free lifestyle.

Here I have given you my top 10 tips for storage solutions in your home that won’t blow the budget!

1.   Shoeboxes

I'm sure many of us have had hundreds of these over the years.

Don’t throw them away!

They are super sturdy and a great storage option.

I use a lot of shoe boxes to fold scarves in and smaller children’s clothing items in too. This is such an affordable solution to tidying and decluttering, rather than splurging on something I love but can’t really justify the spend.

2.   Jars for food storage

Old jam jars, pasta sauce jars, even baby food jars can all come in handy. I like to decant my non perishable food items into jars, so pasta, rice, grains, pulses can all go into lidded jam jars etc. If you can label them, it’s a perfect shabby chic look and is extremely cost effective as you already have them in your home!

 3.   Command hooks - Buy here

I discovered these about 5 years ago and I’m still very much in love with them.

Utilising hooks on unused wall spaces can provide you with some extra storage areas.

They are super versatile and can be used on any flat surface, without being a permanent option.

Ways I’ve use them for clients include:

Hats in a wardrobe

Necklaces and small jewellery items

Tea towels on cupboard doors

The list is endless and at only a few pound per hook, this is a perfect budget friendly storage solution!

4.   Ikea Skubb boxes - Buy here

These boxes are my go to product for any wardrobe overhaul.

They are a perfect size for folding t-shirts and smaller clothing items into.

They are slim and compact and fit into most drawers.

An absolute perfect solution for keeping drawers mess free and they are £6 for a set of 6 so an absolute bargain too.

5.   Laundry Sacks - Buy here

The amount of clients I speak to who have laundry issues is very, very high!

These sacks are a perfect solution for hanging in bedrooms or laundry rooms, without using up too much space.

Having one in each room, on a hook, will save space and also keep laundry in one place and not gathering dust in piles on thefloor.

They are relatively cheap to buy, or if you are creative an easy and affordable solution to make with a sewing machine.

6.   Hairbands and scrunchies

Scrunchies are the bane of my life right now.

Claire’s accessories is my daughter’s heaven and their scrunchies and hair bobbles seem to multiply regularly.

It may not one the most glamorous of storage options, but using empty toilet roll or kitchen roll tubes to store them on isan absolute perfect way of keeping them tidy and less out of control.

Bonus points if you rainbow colour order them too!

7.   Trolley - Buy here

Now this is a complete game changer for anyone that needs mobile storage around the home!

Coming in at only £29, it’s the perfect budget storage solution for tight spaces.

I utilise mine for all arts and crafts supplies in our house, as we seem to have A LOT!

These trolleys also work perfectly in a kitchen to provide extra food storage space.

I’ve also used them before for excess food stock for clients and I feel it could be a great winner being utilised in a bathroom too.

The options are endless for this bargain storage solution.

8.   A4Wallets - \Buy here

If you have children (or even if you are a jigsaw lover!), you will know how much space board games and puzzle boxes take up in your home.

By decanting them, just like you can do with food products, can help to minimise the space these take up.

I utilise plastic A4 wallets to keep all games and puzzles in. They can easily be labelled and stored in soft baskets, which means you are halving the space they take up. It also means you can move them about the home quite easily, as you have them all together in one basket.

It’s space saving and time saving on a budget too!

9.   Overdoor shoe holders - Buy here

I came across these a few years ago and haven’t look back with the versatility of them.

Obviously these are perfect for shoe storage, but they are also a great space saver for so many other items.

I’ve use them for clients’ cleaning products, as well as toiletries and small toys and dolls too.

As they are utilising a mainly unused space -the back of the door - it’s a win win in terms of storage and organising.

At £10.99 they are such a great budget option for utilising unused space.

10. Sell, Sell, Sell!!

If you have the time and energy to want to sell any items, then the internet has so many easy ways for you to make money from your unwanted items.

The key is to sell items on different places, dependent on what they are - that way you are getting the most of unwanted items and not selling them for pennies.

My firm 4 favourites are-

•  Facebook market place - perfect for children toys and furniture, it’s a quick and easy process for more bulkier items.

•  Computer repair shop - my local shop buys old phones, laptops etc for cash and uses them for spare parts. Don’t bin if you can recycle and make extra money!

•  Vinted - This is SUCH a great site for selling clothes. There are no fees and it is relatively simple to sell and send, no post office visits either. The best part is - no selling fees!

•  Music magpie - selling bulk DVD’s and CD’s can be very lengthy, but not with this site as you just scan the item and it tells you how much they will buy it from you. You won’t make a fortune, but if you are getting rid of a bulk, the amount can add up for you.

Now who doesn’t want to make money easily?!

I hope that this has got you in the mood to become more organised, declutter and even make a bit of money whilst doing it!
