As one of four children, I was amazed at my Mum’s ability to keep a nice home, which was always clean and tidy with flowers on display and a freshly baked cake ready in case someone “popped in”. Until recently, I hadn’t realised how hard she must have worked.
After leaving home and living in shared accommodation, I had no idea how to clean and would often put it off until I was reminded by my flat mates that it was my turn to scrub the bathroom. I worried that I wasn’t doing it correctly but I never asked anyone for help. I did the best I could but I certainly didn’t enjoy it.
I have always appreciated the power of a clear space with low level lighting, a candle and a chilled soundtrack to ease the tension of a long day but when I was younger, it was easier to stuff all of my belongings into my wardrobe and out of sight.
Moving in with my boyfriend (now husband) I had the foolish idea that being a domestic goddess would just come to me. It didn’t. With a demanding job, I had an easy excuse for my home to be in chaos most of the time.
The older I got, the more mess bothered me. When we bought our first house I thought it would be a new start and again, I would miraculously become a skilled homemaker. I thought having more space would help. At first it did as there were more places to hide things. Our house would always look good for guests, until they opened a particular door and our belongings that had not yet found a “place” would spill out of it. Then the DIY started. Then we had a baby. Then another! Every project or milestone brought with it a different challenge when it came to organisation, space and cleanliness.
While I was pregnant, I turned to books and social media for advice on how to prepare for a child and it was then I came across influencers, celebrities, experts and real people who not only offered guidance about parenthood but also how to clean, declutter and organise your home, while also taking care of your own wellness. I have been hooked ever since.
I don’t have a perfect home and I don’t have all the answers. I need advice, tips and tricks and I know there are others who need it too. The Clean & Tidy Home Show will bring together this growing community and support network of homemakers so whether you have ideas, expertise or interest, we hope to see you there.
