12 months ago we decided to chase our dreams of working remotely & travelling around the world in our self-converted camper van. We were both giving up huge careers which we had thrived in for the past 10 years. However, the biggest stress we had was to minimise our belongings from a 3 bedroom house to a tiny 18s qm van.
Thoughts that kept running through our minds as we went room from room was how did we accumulate so much stuff? It took us a whole month with lots of trips to local charities with kitchenware, furniture, bags & bags of clothes. We could of easily have set up our own shop. It made us realise that when we live in a house again one day, the importance of regular organisation & minimalizing as you go. We are all guilty of filling cupboards & forgetting what we have. Resulting in unnecessary buying of. things you may not need. The anxiety sifting through piles & piles of paperwork that had built up over the years that was so easy to keep throwing into a filing cabinet in the corner of our study. A task that would of saved us days if we had just kept on top of everything as we went.
Fast forward 12 months we can honestly say that its such a liberating feeling to have everything we need/own in such a small space. In our home on wheels we built a living room area, toilet, shower, kitchen with a sink, oven & hob & full size bed. We wanted to design it so we had everything we needed to call it our self-contained ‘home’. We now appreciate everything we own & know exactly where to find it. One important routine we have had to adapt is keeping the van organised, clean and tidy at all times. It definitely doesn’t take as long to deep clean the van as our 3 bedroom house which means we can spend more time doing the things we love.
One important thing we had to think about when switching to this lifestyle is the safety & security so we built a safe in a secret location inside the van & also went digital with all our important paperwork & life admin. Thankfully we use the amazing app fyio, a free digital filing cabinet which has revolutionised the way we can stay organised with paperwork safely & securely.
This new lifestyle has been a huge adjustment but we can honestly say it's been life changing. It’s made us be more organised as we have to always think about where we can park, where can we fill up of fresh water, dispose of our grey waste water & our chemical toilet. We now appreciate all the little things in life & realise how much we can all take for granted. When you live in a house you can simply push a button to flush away your toilet or shower with unlimited supply of fresh water & then not worry about where that waste water goes.
The best part of living on the road is having the freedom to take our home on wheels anywhere & have everything we need. Some of the views we have had out of our window this year include views of France, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Belgium, Luxembourg & The Netherlands. And this is still just the beginning.
