Celebrating Clean & Tidy Heroes

Kerry Mackay from ScrubbiesUK

Meet Kerry.

Founder and Builder of a Sustainable Business with a Heart.

We’re delighted to introduce Kerry Mackay from ScrubbiesUK. Mother, business owner, entrepreneur and empowerer of people, Kerry is a crusader in the quest to end plastic waste and highlight the link between poverty and climate change.

The story behind ScrubbiesUK is both heart breaking and inspirational. Single mum Kerry was facing extreme poverty after she was forced to leave her home around the same time that her benefits were reduced. As a trained analytical chemist, Kerry struggled to support herself and her son, and relied on food banks for all provisions.  Entrepreneurial to the core, she began generating a small income by creating purses using a sewing machine in her home. Then, after a friend asked if she could make a product that was truly sustainable,Kerry began to make reusable, compostable sponge alternatives - using bamboo, organic cotton and vegan ink, launching ScrubbiesUK in 2020. In its first year ,ScrubbiesUK turned over £50,000, and as the business continues to grow, Kerry is set to replace over 5 million plastic sponges with her compostable alternatives and achieve a projected 5 year turnover of £3million.

Kerry’s achievements continue to be recognised and celebrated. ScrubbiesUK was named winner of Product of the Year at the National Environmental Awards 2021, and winner of Small Business of the Year Award from Small Business Britain. AND Kerry herself was recently named one of the top 100 most inspirational and dynamic female entrepreneurs in the UK, as part of a campaign by f:Entrepreneuer to celebrate the achievements of women running businesses in the UK.

“The journey from food bank poverty has been tough but it’s so rewarding to have those efforts recognised and help push ScrubbiesUK forward in the fight against plastic waste. ScrubbiesUK is committed to helping empower people in society and highlight the link between poverty and climate change. From setting up inmate manufacturing, which will fund rehabilitation and qualification projects, right through to producing a full range of high quality, plastic free, compostable products with a price tag that’s accessible to all, ScrubbiesUK will continue to grow and spread profits to those who need them the most.”
