Life in the Great Outdoors

Picture of Karen friend sat at a table. There are pots of jam in front of her, as well as vegetables.

When I first moved to Frampton Farm 18 months ago, I owned one cat, now on the farm I have 7 alpacas, 40 sheep, 40ish (we’re going through birthing season) lambs, 12 goats, 10 pigs, 30 chickens, and 6 ducks.

We run a 26-acre small holding, located between Dover and Folkestone, growing organic produce and caring for our animals.

I began this journey all the way back when I still had atypical 9-5 office job. Trapped at a desk all day I found a therapeutic relief in tending to my garden, I taught myself to grow a small amount of veg and flowers that fit in my more modest garden.

Now, I spend my days more outdoors then in, instead of a 2 metre by 2 metre vegetable garden, I have a polytunnel and greenhouse, an entire field dedicated to my gardening.

I began this journey during lockdown at our previous home, where I began documenting my experience on my Instagram account @themiddleagedblogger and I even encouraged some of my own followers to begin their gardening life.

Now I am self employed working on the farm, I have launched my own seed and plant subscription boxes. Each month I send out carefully selected veg seeds with step guides on sowing and growing your own produce.

I’m happier than I ever was in an office block, and even when I’m up at 3am tending to the lambs, I am filled with this beautiful fulfilment that comes with an honest life in the great outdoors.
