Why did you start Ekologik?
ekologik actually stems from a family business. We have successfully been producing and selling plastic-free cleaning pods for the past 25 years to the commercial cleaning market from our factory in Bristol, UK.
In 2021, with a goal of making these sustainable and effective products more accessible to the masses, myself and the team developed a new range of plastic-free pods specifically formulated for use in the home. ekologik was created to help those passionate about cleaning, make the switch to a sustainable alternative.
Together with our customers, we are creating a cleaner environment inside and out.
How do you help to reduce plastic?
ekologik pods create powerful, sustainable cleaning solutions when customers agitate the pods with water from their own homes. Our products are sold in plastic free packaging. Also, for our bottle-based products, ekologik pods include plastic-free stickers. This encourages our customers to reuse the spray or toilet bottles that they already have at home, rather than putting them in the bin.
Our packing is also 100% plastic free, with pods packed in either compostable or recyclable material.
As a business we also work closely with the Charity Surfers Against Sewage and donate 2% of sales to helping them clear plastic from UK beaches.
Why do you think some of us can be nervous to make sustainable switches?
I think that people are often nervous to make sustainable switches for a few reasons.
Based on my own frustrations as a conscious customer and looking into sustainability and consumer behaviour, I actually identified 3 very reasons why many of us are reluctant to make sustainable swaps.
1. Is that eco alternatives are often perceived to be inconvenient. Anything that involves a big change in customers behaviour can discourage adoption and they are less likely to rebuy.
2. Secondly, there is the belief that sustainability must mean - expensive. And as the cost of living becomes an ever pressing concern, the cost of eco products on the shelves can quite simply be out of reach.
3. Finally, the effectiveness of eco-cleaners does not compare to the single-use option that we’ve been consuming for decades.
It was really important for me that ekologik pods (in addition to providing a cleaning solution that significantly reduces single-use plastic), encourage more people to shop sustainably.
We have made this a reality by making ekologik pods affordable, easy to use and extremely effective. This can be seen through the reviews we have obtained on Trustpilot, our 75% returned customer rate and feedback from our existing sustainable stockists.
Why is it important that your products are affordable?
I believe that sustainable products do not need to be expensive. As the cost of living becomes an ever-pressing concern for all our customers, ekologik pods are an accessible solution for a large percentage of households wanting to reduce their plastic consumption and support British businesses.
By making ekologik pods affordable, I hope to encourage more people to make sustainable swaps and continue on the 'sustainability train' by swapping out more household items with sustainable alternatives.
What is in the future for Ekologik?
I am so excited for the future of ekologik. We have some amazing opportunities with some great stockists lined up and we also will be launching some new products very soon. Some of which we will be showcasing at the Clean and Tidy show. So watch this space and come join us over the weekend!
