Five ways to make your Spring Clean more Sustainable

Sustainable Spring Clean

The evenings are getting lighter, the snowdrops are here and you might even have a vase of daffodils out, so for us cleaning lovers that means one thing right?  Dusters at the ready we are primed to start our Spring Clean!

But this year, more than ever, we should be thinking about how to protect the planet whilst we scrub.

Through launching my business cleen, I’ve discovered so much about how to green my clean and reduce my impact on the planet.  So today, I wanted to share five ways to make your Spring Clean more sustainable:

  1. Use what you already have: the most sustainable thing we can do is use what we’ve already got..  So before you rush out to try the latest sprays and foams, check through your cupboards and under your sinks and use up what you already have.

  1. Swap your cleaning tools:  did you know most sponges and microfibre cloths are made from plastic?  And worse, whilst you’re cleaning they release microplastics into our water and that makes it way to pollute our oceans.   By swapping to zero waste alternatives like compostable sponges, bamboo cloths and coconut scourers, you can reduce your impact on the environment without compromising a great clean.

  1. Switch to toxic-free: most traditional cleaning products are filled with as many as 60 toxins per bottle known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs).  These toxins pollute our air, damage our health, disrupt our DNA and are harmful to aquatic life.  By switching to toxic-free products you’re making a choice that’s better for you, your home and the planet.

  1. Make your own:  got a jar of bicarbonate of soda?  This common household item is the most brilliant green cleaner, you can use it to degrease, remove stains and reduce odour.   One of my favourite bicarb hacks is to clean our sink: wet your sink, sprinkle bicarb all over, and work through in circular motions with a sponge or scourer, rinse clean & enjoy the sparkle!

  1. Join the refill revolution: Every year the UK generates more than two million metric tons of plastic packaging waste.  This spring say goodbye to single-use plastic and all the waste it brings by trying out some refillable cleaning products.  There are so many amazing options in the UK right now, like Tincture, Kinn and Spruce.  Let’s refill not landfill!
