Decluttering Calendar

The Clean & Tidy Home Show Guide to Decluttering in 2022

Here at the Clean & Tidy Home Show, we love to tidy and declutter, making sure we’re selling on, recycling and repurposing as we go. But we appreciate that clutter can become overwhelming at times, especially after the festive holiday season ends, and you just want to clear up and move on into the new year with a tidy, organised home - but you don’t know where to start.

We’ve created an easy-to-follow, month by month guide to help you keep on top of your clutter, with small achievable goals that you can prioritise. Easy-peasy!

You’re welcome!

Jump start January

If you haven’t already, carefully pack away your Christmas decorations and find homes for all the family’s gifts. This is a job that can be shared amongst the family, with each person being responsible for finding a space for all their new possessions. This will inevitably create a mass of recyclable and resalable items that are no longer wanted or needed.

Clean and tidy any guest rooms that were used over the holidays – packing away any bedding and towels that are not in day-to-day use.

Full Clean February

We like to take refuge in long bubble baths during the cold winter months and are suddenly more aware of the watermarks all over the tiles. So, our February focus is the bathroom. Clean tiles and glass and clean or replace any grout that needs refreshed.

Sort through your cabinets for any out-of-date products or empty containers that are hanging around. Check the recycling status of the bottles and tubs to ensure they’re allocated to the correct recycling bin.

March into March

Get stuck into your kitchen – clean out cupboards while checking for out of date food stuff. Now that the days are getting lighter and warmer, your kitchen will feel lighter and airier and you will feel the benefit from a deep oven clean. Also, review your appliances and ask yourself if you really need the spiralizer or the toastie maker? If you’re keeping items you no longer need or want, now’s the time to sell on or donate to a local charity shop.

Organising April

Now that days are lighter, it’s worth spending some time tidying and sorting your garden or outside space. Tidy your shed or garage if you have one, and sell on any unwanted garden toys or furniture.

It’s also time to start thinking about changing your bedding over to summer duvets and sheets. Wash all your winter bedding thoroughly and vacuum pack them away so they take up as little room as possible. Recycle any threadbare bedding.

Your wardrobe will also need to be reviewed thanks to the change of season. Be honest with yourself when it comes to clothes – have you worn the item in the past 12 months? Does it still fit? Is it in good repair? Dry clean and wash all winter clothes that will be put away for the summer, and donate or recycle any clothes that are no longer required. This will need be done for all the family wardrobes.

May the Force be with You!

Now that summer is well on its way, any patio or balcony areas will need some attention. Clean your BBQ if you have one. Give your entrance a makeover - clean your front door and review any pots or window boxes. Pack away any out-of-season toys to make way for the outdoor focused summer fun toys.

Review the footwear in your household. Are there any pairs of shoes that no longer fit or are beyond repair? Recycle or donate as appropriate. Make space for your summer shoes by cleaning and boxing away your boots and colder weather shoes. Label your boxes so you know exactly what is inside to avoid any confusion later in the year.

The Joy of June

If you have a family, get the kids involved and get them to sort through their toys, games, books etc for any items they’ve outgrown. Encourage them to sell the unwanted items in a garage sale or online market place in order to raise funds for summer activities and days out.

 July and August

After all your organisation over the earlier months, you can enjoy your beautifully organised home during thesummer months!

Stepping up in September

It’s time to start thinking about the approaching autumn – and go back through the steps taken earlier in the year. Tidy up outside spaces and pack away any summer appliances, garden furniture and BBQ’s. Pack away your flip flops and sandals, it’s time for boots and socks again.

For loads of decluttering, organising and cleaning advice, make sure you’ve bought your ticket for the Clean & Tidy Home Show at ExCeL London on 8th & 9th October 2022.

Organising October

Now the days are getting shorter, its back into the kitchen to clean out cupboards and the fridge, in preparation for the Christmas festivities on the horizon. Clean your oven and fridge thoroughly… and pack away any outdoor or picnic cutlery that has made its way into your everyday drawer.

Tackle your mess-drawer or cupboard... sort items into groups and consider drawer dividers so everything has a place. Dig out your winter footwear, coats, gloves and hats, and pack away your summer wear once cleaned. Recycle or donate any unsuitable items that won’t fit the following year.

Bring out the winter bedding – it’s time for the higher Tog and the extra blankets! Pack away any summer bedding, recycling anything that is threadbare and unusable.

Don’t miss the Clean & Tidy Home Show at ExCeL London on 8th & 9th October 2022.

November already?

It’s time to start thinking about Christmas and Holiday preparations. If you have children, audit all toys and games to make sure those that are unsuitable or unwanted can be sold onto to families who will make use of them.

Decorating December

In early December, we like to get back into the kitchen and clean out the fridge and cupboards ready for the festive fayre. Dig out the decorations and make space for the tree… It’s time for the festivities to begin once again!
