Danielle's Shine Squad Story

Shine Squad Story

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi, my name is Danielle, I'm married and a mum of two. I’m behind my social media account Housetohomeatlast which I started about 5 years ago when we first started to renovate our home. I mainly share everything on my Instagram as this is where it all started. I created it as a way of sharing our home progress so that it was separate to my personal account and people could follow along who had an interest in what we were doing. Over time my account has really grown and as more people became interested in what I was sharing, I started to share more and more and now my account covers a whole range of things from interior, cleaning, family life, shopping hauls and just general day to day life as a mum. There are a lot of people who inspire me, especially people like Mrs Hinch who were just doing it as something she enjoyed and never imagined it would grow so big, she was just sharing the things she loved and enjoyed doing and now she's really grown into a very well known household name.

How did you learn how to keep a home?

I feel like a lot of things I know about keeping a home have come from my Grandma, she was always one to share her opinion on how she thinks things should be done and what brands/products she would use for certain things and It hink they’ve just always stuck in my head. Over the years I have branched out and tried lots of the new products that are available and I do think a lot of it is just trial and error but with there being so much on social media now, I think its so much easier for people to learn new tips/tricks and see how other people go about their household jobs.

What is your favourite homemaking activity?

Making my bed in the morning is one of my favourite things to do, now I won’t say I have the energy or time to do it every day, but the days when I do I really feel it helps to make a difference to my day. It’s kind of starting the day as you mean to go on, it sets you up with the right mind set for the day ahead& and I tend to have a much more productive day.

What homemaking product couldn’t you live without?

The one thing I couldn’t live without in my home is probably my hoover. I use it every single day and there is so many other things I use it for, not just the floors. I’ve tried so many different brands as well and I’m well known for having a cupboard just for all my hoovers. They all have different things which are good for different jobs/rooms & depending on my mood.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed? How do you cope?

Some days, things can be really overwhelming, you can feel like you have so much to get done, not enough time and maybe just don’t know where to start. One thing that always helps me is to make a list room by room of what I want to get done.Take your notepad and look around each room writing down the things that need doing, even the really obvious ones. I find that looking back at the list, picking something then doing it and being able to cross it off really helps me get through it. It keeps you on track and motivated and stops you feeling like you’re not getting anywhere. You can see the progress you're making with everything you tick off your list.

Why is #shinenotshame important to you?

The #shinenotshame hashtag is a brilliant way of encouraging more people to ask for help if needed or just to help people feel better about the mess they have. I love to share the reality of a home life and always try to show the mess before it’s tidied or organised and I think it’s important for people to see this and not just see clean & tidy homes all the time. It’s good for people to see that it’s not just their homes that look that messy but also for them to see what can be done to it, either with a tidy up or a declutter and reorganise. Keeping a clean & tidy home isn't something we’re all taught so it’s a learning curve for everyone.

What is an interesting fact about you?

Something you may not know about me is that we spent 2 years living in Australia which we absolutely loved. My son Isaac was born while we were over there and it was a really special time in our lives. It holds lots of memories for us but were turned to the UK shortly after Isaac was born and we’re really settled where we live now. This is where my instagram name came from, we spent a lot of time moving around and always renting houses, but we finally settled somewhere and bought a house which we’ve made our home.
